When was the last time you visited the dermatologist for a skin cancer screening?

We all have moles, but it’s important not to ignore them. The summertime equates to more time in the sun, and if you aren’t wearing molessunscreen or have been sunburned in your lifetime then you are at risk for skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, and our South Barrington and Willowbrook IL, dermatologists Drs. Jeffrey and Toula Berti want to protect their patients by arming them with knowledge and education about skin cancer.

Know What to Look For

If you have a lot of moles, you are fair-skinned or you have a family history of skin cancer, it’s particularly important that you examine your skin regularly and know how to protect yourself against skin cancer. Moles should maintain the same appearance throughout the years; therefore, if you start to notice changes in the color, shape, size or texture of a mole, it’s best to see Drs. Jeffrey and Toula Berti for an evaluation. If any of your moles become painful or tender to the touch, or bleed, crust or weep it’s also important to see a skin doctor right away.

Perform Monthly Self Skin Exams

You should be performing regular skin exams on yourself once a month. You will want to use a full-length mirror, which can help you see areas that may be difficult to examine on your own. You may also wish to use a hand mirror, which can help you evaluate growths on the scalp or in other more difficult-to-reach areas. Don’t ignore any area of the body. It’s important to check all spots including the scalp, back of the knees, groin and between the toes.

See a Dermatologist Annually

While self-skin exams are important for everyone to perform every month, this won’t take the place of what a skincare professional can do. It’s important that you see your dermatologist at least once a year for a comprehensive evaluation. We can monitor your moles every year to spot even the smallest changes. We can also determine whether any changes in your moles require additional testing. Skin cancer screenings are painless but could just save your life. The exam is professional and thorough.

If you are dealing with changing or suspicious moles, it’s always a good idea to turn to our dermatologists Drs. Jeffrey and Toula Berti. Call Dermatology & Dermatologic Surgery today. South Barrington at (847) 304-0303, and Willowbrook at (630) 321-0303.
