As you probably know, relaxing our frown lines with Botox and all of the FDA approved similar medications, such as Dysport, have becomebotox one of the most popular ways to cosmetically enhance your skin. This non-invasive, injectable treatment offers a subtle, yet noticeable, difference in your skin, giving you a more youthful and refreshed appearance. Read on to learn more, and contact Dr. Jeffery Berti or Dr. Toula Berti of Dermatology & Dermatologic Surgery, Ltd, in South Barrington and Willowbrook, IL, to schedule a consultation.

How does Botox work?
Botox is made from a protein that naturally occurs in the environment. The substance is sterilized and FDA approved to inject small amounts into certain muscles to safely and temporarily weaken them from contracting so hard. When this happens, the wrinkles that have formed from constant muscular activity begin to smooth out. It takes about one week for the mechanism of Botox to take full effect and it lasts about 3 to 4 months.

Where can I have Botox placed?
Botox is approved for cosmetic use in the muscles on the forehead, between the eyebrows known as the “11’s” (glabellar lines), and the outer corners of the eyes ("crows' feet"). Your dermatologist in South Barrington and Willowbrook, IL, will examine the muscles and determine how Botox can help enhance your appearance.

Does Botox hurt?
Being an injectable, Botox does require the use of a very fine needle for placement. However, most patients do not report much, if any, discomfort during the brief procedure. There may be a slight pinch and a warm sensation during the application. After your Botox treatment, you may experience a slight headache or some localized bruising where the solution was injected. This is typically minor and shouldn't interfere with your daily activities.
