With Winter here it’s important that you know how to handle your eczema symptoms.
Eczema is a skin condition that affects all ages and can cause rough, red patches to appear on the skin. When a flare-up occurs, these dry patches can form anywhere on the body and may itch or even bleed.  Since those areas are not normal skin, they can get infected as well.  It can be a frustrating cycle and, of course, there are certainly conditions and factors that can cause more frequent flare-ups. As the weather gets colder, dry skin concerns become more prominent. From the offices of our South Barrington and Willowbrook, IL dermatologists, Dr. Jeffrey Berti and Dr. Toula Romas Berti, find out how to keep your eczema under control this winter.
Cold, dry air outside and forced dry air inside can cause dry skin and make your eczema flare-ups worse. Figuring out what triggers your eczema is important. If you find that your eczema symptoms get worse during the winter here are some ways to help manage:

Use a moisturizer every day: Using gentle, fragrance-free products and a moisturizer (cream not lotion) every day can help to lock in moisture to protect against dry, frigid wind and air. If you aren’t sure which kind of moisturizer to use, ask our South Barrington and Willowbrook, IL, skin doctors for a recommendation of what the best products are for you. Drs. Berti also carry products to purchase, such as Vanicream and Vaniply.

Try a humidifier: Like most people, you probably run the heat full blast in your home during the winter months. Of course, dry heat can also spell disaster for eczema. To combat this, use a humidifier in your home to prevent dry air.

Purchase a Water Softener: The water in the Chicago area is hard, meaning there is a high mineral content and the soap does not lather as well nor rinse off as well, leaving a residue that can irritate the skin.  A simple water softener is easy to have installed and economical to run.  Your skin and hair will thank you!

Choose the Right Clothing: While you certainly want to stay warm during the freezing winter months there are certain fabrics that could be a foe to your eczema. Instead of opting for itchy wool, which can irritate eczema-prone skin, choose softer fabrics like cotton.

Minimize Sweating: While sweating cannot always be avoided, particularly if you exercise regularly, it’s important that you find a way to remain warm without sweating throughout the day. Perhaps your office is a sauna during the winter months because your building cranks up the heat and you still need to bundle up on your way to work. Dressing in layers will be your best friend. If you get too hot, you can always remove these layers so that your skin is comfortable.
Dr. Jeffrey Berti and Dr. Toula Berti may also prescribe eczema sufferers with prescription-strength steroid creams for when flare-ups occur. If over-the-counter creams aren’t doing the trick or if you think the skin has an infection, have us evaluate your skin.  We will determine whether prescription steroid creams or other prescription medications would work better for you.
If you’ve been diagnosed with eczema or if you have dry irritated skin and are seeking a treatment that will work for you, then it’s time to consult the eczema specialists at Dermatology & Dermatologic Surgery, Ltd., in South Barrington and Willowbrook, IL.
